Corporal punishment in state schools in the United Kingdom was abolished in 1986, and in private schools in England and Wales in 1998. Bullying, once regarded as a normal hazard of growing up, or even as a character-forming experience, is now widely condemned, both in school and at the workplace. And although the precise relationship remains elusive, the decline in interpersonal violence between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries coincided with the retreat from inflicting public executions, public whippings and public shaming punishments on convicted criminals. Changes in official attitudes are further demonstrated by how the police and the law courts, albeit imperfectly in some instances, are now much more alert to the reality of domestic violence and to the need for the sympathetic and sensitive treatment of rape victims. The everyday recourse to violence that was apparently so widespread even two centuries ago is now seen, rightly or wrongly, as the prerogative of discrete, and normally lower-class, groups: boys in disadvantaged council estates, teenage gangs, football hooligans, professional criminals, working-class ‘hard men’.

In 2014, Pollan co-hosted a discussion and informal debate on the topic of genetic modification at UC Berkeley featuring prominent plant geneticist Pamela Ronald , professor at UC Davis , whose research-based position "strongly disagrees with Pollan’s view that . crops, broadly, are failing." [17] A New Yorker reporter observed that Pollan's largely anti-GMO student base at the discussion itself constituted, "a kind of monoculture," yet that Pollan sought "to introduce an invasive species" by engaging Ronald. The event, while predictably contentious, reportedly produced a rare instance of courteous, productive exchange between the two main sharply-opposed viewpoints on genetically-modified crops. [18]

The complex, often technical style of On Human Conduct found few readers, and its initial reception was mostly one of bafflement. Oakeshott, who rarely responded to critics, used an article in the journal Political Theory to reply sardonically to some of the contributions made at a symposium on the book. [13]

The Allegory of Love: A Study of Medieval Tradition (1936)
In one of Lewis's most respected literary works, The Allegory of Love , Lewis examines love, with an emphasis on courtly love in medieval literature.

French philosopher Giles Deleuze is keen to emphasise that Bacon paints heads not faces. Bacon’s project, he says, is to dismantle the face by rubbing or brushing until it loses its form; this enables the rediscovery of the head or makes it emerge from beneath the face (Deleuze 20-21). Deleuze stresses the solitariness and helplessness of the heads: ‘the forces of the cosmos confronting an intergalactic traveller immobile in his capsule’ (58).
